Meditation.

I found meditation ten years ago when I attended a Buddhist group . Or it found me. Either way I found it very beneficial and have not stopped meditating. I have changed the way that I meditate . I tend to do it at bedtime rather than the morning as I am not a morning person and like to get my day underway when I am up. Any time is the right time.  Sometimes I put on a guided meditation or music from You Tube to help me start but otherwise it is just in silence. Type in meditation and lots come up.  I like to sit outside during the day and meditate with a gentle breeze on me. This is so calming and relaxing and I feel so much better afterwards. If you are starting out find a nice quiet spot either inside or out that helps you relax. This can be aided with the use of incense or a candle. A large comfy cushion is also ideal. Do not get too hot or too cold as this will distract you. I like to have a shawl around me in winter as this feels nice and cosy. I find that meditation helps me sleep and also cope better with the demands of daily life. Quiet the mind and concentrate on the breath. If you mind wanders as it tends to do , don't worry just return to the breath." Inhale the good shit and exhale the bullshit"  as the saying goes. You might find going to a class more structured and get you in the way of meditation. Local community centres or private classes in your area may be beneficial.

Walking meditation might be more your thing where you walk slowly and concentrate on the steps. It is great to be outside and I have even done one in a maze which was different.

Another aspect of focusing on something else is to have a safe place to go in your head. If you are upset, nervous or afraid think about your safe place. Imagine you are by a stream or in a forest, up a mountain or just in a familiar place like your own garden. Inside is also an option so imagine a nice cosy room or cottage or perhaps a temple. You can have several of these safe places as you wish and use them when you like. It is like taking time out without leaving home or your comfy bed. Try it and see if this helps you.

Music for meditation. This is a wonderful aid to meditation and there are many varieties of natural soothing sounds or mantras to enhance your practice. Classical music can also be used.

Good luck with your meditation practice and enjoy the serenity.
