For my birthday this year I decided that I have enough things in my house and life and would rather have an experience and memories instead. I decided to go on an excursion to Melbourne with my daughter and have a treat and stay in a hotel for the night. This is how our adventure turned out.
We caught the train up in the morning and I started reading a new book that I received for my birthday on Sisi, the empress of Austria and Hungary but more on her in a later blog. The time flew by and we were soon disembarking at Flinders street station. We made our way up Elizabeth St to our hotel where we left our backpacks till we could return later and check in as we were too early. Off shopping and our adventure began. We walked down Bourke St which is the shopping heart of Melbourne and made our way to Daiso , a Japanese discount store which we both love. I got a small trolley and off I went. There are so many cheap items to choose from and all two dollars eighty in price. I bought a hair grip as I had left mine at home and it was hot outside and wanted to get my hair up. I got a lovely little blue bowl which is ideal to keep my earrings in when I take them out. I bought my nephew some brightly coloured rubbers in the shape of diggers and tractors as he is about to start school next year and for Christmas I bought the cat two toy mice to play with which he will love. My daughter had a spend as well. So we had fun wandering around Daiso having a good look. We then ventured out into the heat and headed back the other side of Bourke St. We went into Zara and had a look at the clothes and then onto H&M to do the same. By this tie we were getting tired and hungry so wandered down the lanes till we found a nice little coffee shop to have a rest and grab a bite to eat. We sat outside in the lane way and enjoyed a trio of dips and an apple juice and a chai latte. Rested and ready to go we made our way back to the hotel to check in.

After checking out our room which was spacious with a huge flat screen TV we had a rest and a cup of tea and then headed out in the late afternoon.
We walked up Swanston St to RMIT, the university where my daughter is studying and looked around the campus.
After the university we were thirsty so went to a local bar for a delicious cocktail and a rest. It was lovely to sit and relax with a tall iced drink.
When we finished we decided to look inside the State Library which I had not seen before. It was lovely and cool inside and very peaceful with reading rooms and art spaces.
It was then time for dinner and we decided to look for somewhere local and had a wander close by. We finally decided on Poppa Rich a Malaysian restaurant with delicious noodles. We ordered a rice noodle dish dish and a chicken and rice one which we shared.
The meal was lovely and after it we wandered back to the hotel. Next door to the hotel was a burger and dessert place so we went in for a dessert before retiring to bed. We ate a donut with icecream and that really filled us up. Climbing into bed was a treat and we watched Jurassic world on TV. then went to sleep. Ten o'clock was checkout time . Breakfast was had at McDonalds and then off to Flinders St. station where we left our packs till we returned later in the day. Off we went to visit the Potter Gallery at Federation Square. There were interesting exhibitions on so we wandered round in the cool and even paddled in a small pool in the complex.
Our final activity was a boat ride down the Yarra river which was tranquil and relaxed. We sat and listened to the commentary on the way up the river and just relaxed on the way down.
Our time was nearly over but there was time for lunch so we strolled up to Southbank on the Yarra and went into the food hall. I had a mushroom and basil toastie with cheese and a cold drink and my daughter ate vegetarian Indian with rice and dahl.
We had had such a good time but it was now over so we walked back to Flinders station, picked up our bags and caught the train home. It was a lovely two days and we had enjoyed it immensely. A great way to spend my birthday. Thank you to my daughter for making it so special.
