Back home. Lunch In Loch.

The trip is over and we have now settled in to home life again. We miss our boat and the beautiful views that passed by our window. We often wish we were back in Europe and off sightseeing so we decided to get out and about in Victoria Australia and enjoy our local sights and experiences.

Our first day trip was to Loch a sleepy little town in rural Gippsland about an hour from our home. It has plenty of rainfall and this shows in the lush green surroundings. My daughter wanted some driving practice so off we went for the day. We rugged up as it is cold here in winter, about 13 degrees. We took the South Gippsland Highway most of the way there, which is also the one that heads to Philip Island - another scenic spot nearby. Loch was established in 1876 with the coming of the railway. It was named in honour of the Governer of Victoria Henry Loch.  The population in 2009-523 and in 2011-967.

Things to do in Loch

There is a big craft community with many quaint shops.

Brewery and distillery, antique shops, cafes, bakery, hotel, galleries, bric a brack shops with curios and books. It is lovely just walking down the street looking at the shops and cafes. The gardens and trees are also a delight.

Festivals in Loch.

Garden Festival. Antique Fair. Food and Wine Festival.

Facilities in Loch.

Although relatively small Loch is well supplied with facilities. These include: Post office, shops, garage, cafes, hotel, parks, playground, tourist railway, sports facilities, lookout, suspension bridge, primary school, public hall, churches and a V/ line coach service.

Lunch in Loch

We found a lovely warm little cafe that had soup on the menu. We ordered one each and it was lentil and vegetable soup which was delicious and so warming and filling.

We then ventured back home for an evening in.

Best Days On The Trip.

Here are some of the highlights and favourite days on our trip. There were many, as every day was wonderful but I have selected my favourites.

Hashtag Amsterdam.

For many reasons this was a favourite. Wandering the streets was interesting and Vondel Park a delight. It was quieter in the park and you could relax and people watch. The food was excellent and the people friendly and helpful. Attractions like the Rikjs Museum were amazing and you could spend so much time just looking at the treasures contained within. It was easy to get around and our small cramped hotel room was the funniest and we actually enjoyed it. Out on the canals sightseeing was fun and interesting. To see the old narrow buildings and streets with their many bikes was amazing. I loved the house boats moored to the sides of the canals and learning about them was interesting and informative. We had a great time in Amsterdam and will not forget our experience.

Wurzburg/Rothenburg Day. Falconia.

This was a huge day with so much to see and a lot of walking.

We started the day at the Wurzburg Palace, a baroque palace and Court garden with its terracing.  We wandered around the gardens taking photos and admiring the views. A lovely way to spend the morning. Our guide then took us into the city center. We wandered the streets then went to see the old main bridge.

Our tour was then over so we went back for lunch on the boat ready for the afternoon .

An afternoon in Rothenburg,  approximately an hour from Wurzburg. It is one of the best preserved  medieval cities in Germany and one of the most picturesque. It is surrounded by its old city wall which you can walk on. The town itself is so quaint and pretty. You think that you are in a fairy story. In fact parts of Beauty and the Beast were filmed there and Belle's house is modelled off one of the houses there. We spent the afternoon looking at the shops and buying some souvenirs. We bought our adelweiss jewellery here, which was a thrill. We visited the torture museum which was not cheerful to say the least. It was pretty horrible. Exhausted we returned to the boat for an early night, tired but happy.

Kuekenhof -The Tulip Farm

Situated to the south of Amsterdam this is the most wonderful place. As a child I had a love for anything Dutch and in particular my favourite flower was the tulip. So this place was absolute heaven for me. I could not get over the array of colour and the plethora of tulips that greeted us as soon as we walked in the entrance. We walked around for hours and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. It certainly makes you happy and puts a smile on your face. Would be happy to go again.

Bremen Day.

Although cold and crisp this was a special day. It was the one we felt connected us to our ancestors as we walked in their path. It was an amazing journey to have taken. We loved the windmill under the floral embankment with the river flowing past. We loved the bronze pigs in the shopping walkway. We loved the market place that brought everything together. The buildings were a sight to behold and so old and took you back years.  I have never been in such a truly wonderful place. I will never forget it. We now have a photo on our dining room wall that we look at and smile. The Schnoor area was amazing and old and incredibly interesting. Having a cup of tea in one of its many cafes was fun and exploring the whole area was fantastic. On the way back we enjoyed the best chips of my life served with sour cream and ketchup. They did not last very long. Would love to return to this marvellous place.

The Rhine Gorge

Enjoying being on the boat and watching the Rhine Gorge go by with its many castles and villages. Having a cup of tea and piece of cake in the luxury of the lounge. Very special.

Budapest by Night.

Wine on the top deck as you float down the Danube into the lights of Budapest on a warm balmy night wrapped in a shawl.  Nirvana.

Useful Things I Took.

My gorgeous warm purple Tibetan shawl was a stand out. I kept it on the end of the bed so that if I lay down during the day I could just cover myself with it and that was enough for warmth and comfort. If I went up on deck I grabbed it and it kept me warm. I took it to the lounge where I curled up with a book or my i pad and snuggled under it.

My memory foam neck support was a necessity on the plane and I also used it as an extra pillow when I went to bed or put it in my back or between my knees in bed. It gave extra support. A must when in bed reading a good book. I loved it.

Bum Wipes or better known as personal hygiene wipes. A must for travellers especially when sick with gastro upsets. They are so soothing and cleansing. Do not forget to take some. Also great in hot weather.

Comb. I forgot to take one so had to buy one. It was a really nice one so use it in my handbag now that I am home.

Compact with mirror. Great for replacing lipstick or fixing the hair. Threw it in my back pack or handbag and used it often.

Peppermints and Werthers lollies. Good for breath and if moorish. Always nice to chew on the bus trips or when waiting for something.A little treat during the day.

Book bag. Kept my book , i pad, notebook in it and grabbed it when I went to the lounge. Everything I wanted contained in it.

Could also use a small cloth bag instead.

Medications. Panadol,  gastro stop, stemetil were a must. Don't forget to take some.

Hat, gloves and scarf. Although spring time when we went it was still cold so we put on a hat and gloves and a scarf. A scarf comes in handy as it can double as a blanket and be rolled op as a pillow or neck and back support.

Hand sanitiser . We used this all the time because at times there was no water or only cold water or the flow was terrible. We also washed our hands then used it. Good to have after hand rails used. We kept a travel one hanging off the straps of our backpacks and handbags ready for use. At the entrance to the lounge and dinning room on the boat there was a sanitiser station that you held your hands under and it squirted it out. There was even a staff member as you entered the dining room standing next to it to make sure that you used it. We called him the hand police! It certainly keeps bugs at bay which is a good thing.

Two mini cloth bags. Were very useful for things like your lanyard with your key card on it and your camera to take to the lounge or dinning room As mentioned before your book, i pad and notebook also.

Packing Cubes. What a great invention. I had three in my pack so the smallest one I put my socks into. The medium size one held my underwear and the biggest one I put my t shirts and singlet tops. They easily go into any drawer and you do not have to unpack them. When you leave you just zip them up and off you go.

Hand creme. This I used every night before going to sleep to ward off the effect [ dryness ] of the hand sanitiser.

Hair wrap. Easier and smaller than a towel. It dries your hair more effectively and you can get dressed and put on makeup while your hair dries. Also hotels only give you a bath towel and none for your hair.

Plastic pill case which I used for my earrings. It was the long one with each section marked for each day of the week. You just opened one day and voila there were a pair of the earrings that you wanted.  Very handy and earrings very accessible and easy to see- brilliant. I bought a metal pill container in the Netherlands with red tulips on it. Much nicer to look at and easier to handle. I originally had a cheap plastic one in my purse that I have now put in my hospital bag.

Those were a few of the articles that I found useful and these are some that I did not.

My small fold up umbrella I did not use but it was recommended to take. It could have been a different story altogether. We were just lucky with the weather I guess. The same applied for my fold in the bag rain coat that was not removed from the bag.

Selfie stick. Did not use this but saw loads of other people with their arms raised and their selfie sticks in action. I found that my phone was too difficult to attach and I was nervous about dropping my phone. Also did not use my phone while away so did not get the use out of either.

Everyone is different. What works for one person might not work for another. Go with you instincts and what works for you.

Happy Travelling.

Funny Moments

Toilets

Always a fabulous subject!!!

One such visit  made us laugh . We had finished our guided tour of Vienna and wanted to go so we ventured down into the underground to use their toilets. As we entered a man rushed up to us in the Ladies. He turned out to be the cleaner and took the money for a pee. He then escorted us into the toilets, opened the door for us, ushered us in and closed the door. I thought that he was going to come in and take down my pants for me. It was so funny. Talk about going above and beyond . We could not believe it. He also called us Maam the whole way. It was like being the queen. We had a good laugh.

Another toilet saga was our trip to Schonbrunn Palace. We were told on the bus not to take backpacks in with us as they were not allowed so we both left ours on the bus and off we went. When inside we wanted to go to the toilet and it dawned on us that we did not have our packs and therefore no money. We met up with a young couple from the boat and told them what we had done. He kindly loaned us some money for a visit and off we went, happy at last. We paid him back that night on the boat.

When we went to use the toilets at Schonbrunn we pushed on the doors as nobody seemed to be coming out of them. Other people also tried with no success. Finally a local came along pulled on the door which swung wide open and she let us in. Remember pull don't push.

Another day in Vienna we were in the Albertina Art Gallery and I was wearing down rapidly so draped myself over a nearby statue to hold me up and take the weight off the poor legs. As I slumped over this poor lady statue I looked down and noticed the plaque on the bottom. What was I leaning on? Only a Rodin statue . The shock made me leap off it as though it was made of hot coals. We had a good laugh and hurried out or the room.

One day at breakfast a lady told us a funny story about her dead father who was two hundred kilograms when he died. She told us that he had to be drained for four days so that he could fit in the coffin. Everyone had a chuckle.

Teddy K. travels the Rhine.

The two gentlemen in the room opposite did a lot of travel and took along their beanie bear called Teddy K. He went everywhere with them and he is on social media with his travels. He even sat in the lounge on the table and enjoyed himself.

Life on board the boat.

Everything was done for us. Our room was cleaned, our beds made and the bathroom scrubbed and restocked while we were down having breakfast or out for the morning. Our cleaner was just gorgeous being bright and cheerful. He would make Heidi towel animals sitting them on the bed with some of our nick nacks that were left around. We would return from sight seeing to one of these beasts.

It was so lovely of him and the room was always immaculate. How great it was not to worry about housework for a change. Every night our beds would be turned down and a chocolate put on our pillows.  The curtains were drawn and the lights above our bed switched on for when we got back from dinner. It was so nice and cosy to come back to. It is always the little things that make a difference. We felt at home and special.

Meals were a delight. Not having to think "What is for dinner?" is just fantastic. The food was all there for us and the menu was extensive and varied every day. The chefs catered well to everyone's taste with a wide variety of food. I miss it now that I a home and have to shop and cook again. Some of the meals we have tried to replicate with some success. It is fun trying. We enjoyed the coffee bar [ of which there were two of them ] with its large choice of lattes and teas on offer.  A special treat for us were the hot chocolates  that we enjoyed in the lounge as the scenery sailed past. There were always biscuits available which were delicious. You could use the coffee bar twenty four hours a day and it was nice to take a drink back to the room or to the lounge.

The Lounge.

Comfortable and spacious with plenty of chairs, tables and couches.

Always a spectacular view unless you were in a loch which was fun.

The bar was at the rear of the lounge as you entered and all the windows down the sides and at the front of the boat. Small white vases graced the small tables between the chairs each one containing a tulip to brighten the lounge. A lovely touch and so cheerful. Coffee and cake was available in the afternoon and there were two containers full of iced lemon tea and iced water available all the time.Down one side was a tressle table where a light lunch was served every day if you did not want to go to the dining room.

A dance floor was in the middle of the lounge with a keyboard on the side where our resident pianist played for us during the day and in the evenings.

The lounge was where we had our port talk with Gunther every night and where the entertainment was. A place to socialise with other passengers or just sit quietly and read. A very pleasant space.

Finger food was available in the late afternoon with crusty bread slices topped with ham, cheese and gherkins. A tray of cake or a large layered cake was also available.

The Bar.
At the back of the lounge was a large semi circular bar. A very popular destination on the boat. Each day they had "Cocktail of the Day", "Mocktail of the Day" and these were less expensive being only three euros each. Heidi and I had a mudslide one night and another day enjoyed a banana colada. Delicious. Heidi on other occasions tried a Blue Lagoon and an apple martini, both of which she enjoyed.

The Dining Room.

Spacious and light with of course magnificent views. Plenty of tables to choose from with lovely table settings.  Heidi and I tried to sit with different people each night to meet them and hear their stories. A lovely Buffet was available and a great menu. Plenty of choices .The service was excellent being quick and efficient. All the meals were out in fifteen minutes. I don't know how they did it. Lots of waiters who were always helpful. Plenty of wine was served and soft drinks and juices were always available.

The Food

Breakfast. Adam's omelette. Adam was our breakfast chef and chief egg cooker. Any way you wanted them he would oblige, boiled, scrambled, poached and fried. His omelettes were the favourite packed with fillings of your choice such as ham, peppers, chorizo, mushrooms, cheese, spring onoins, and tomatoes. They certainly filled you up for the morning sightseeing ahead.

Available were bowls of cereal, muesli, fruit salad, yogurt in plain and vanilla flavours, pastries and pretzels on a stand, bread of all different varieties, sliced or do it yourself ready for toasting. A large toaster sat at the end of the table next to the breads. You put you piece on a convayer belt and it travelled along while being cooked and fell off the end and returned to meet you. It was fun to watch while you waited .  In the hot containers was porridge and the bain marie held hash browns, pancakes bacon, baked beans and different hot dishes every day. Hot tea and coffee was served at the table while you ate.

Lunch

Two containers of soup stood on each side of the dinning room. One with a clear consomme, the other with a thick hearty variety.  Large bowls on both sides contained three different salads, different each day. Crusty slices of bread with different toppings sat next to the soup and these were varied daily also. The hot dish was either a curry, pasta dish, a meat dish or chicken and potatoes to go with some salad. Also available were two dishes to order from your waiter off the menu. Bread was always available on the table presented in linen bags. Wine was always available during the meal. Afterwards you could help yourself to cake [ carrot, black forest, chocolate eclairs or sponge], fresh fruit salad or take a piece of fresh fruit with you. An ice cream bar was at the door on the way out and often Heidi and I would get two flavours in a bowl and take it up to the lounge to finish lunch off.

In the lounge a light lunch was available if you did not want to have a full one. Soup, bread with fillings , a hot choice and dessert.  Nice for a change to sit casually and watch the scenery.

Dinner

Dinner was in the dining room and lasted two hours. It was a time to chill out enjoy your meal ,have a wine and catch up with the joys of the day with fellow passengers. Everything was ordered off the menu and simply delicious. There were four courses but you did not have to partake of them all. Soup came out first . Always lovely and filling. Then there were two choices of entree usually on a salad. Main meals consisted of three choices one of which was vegetarian. If they did not appeal you could always fall back on the chicken and vegetable  or Caesar salad with salmon or chicken which was always on offer. There was something for every one. Dessert had two choices . After the meal coffee was served and you could choose from the cheese board that Adam served up to you. Also a large fresh fruit platter was set out to enjoy. I can tell you that we were never hungry. The only complaints that I heard from the passengers was that they could not do their pants up and that their clothes were getting tight.  But boy did we enjoy it!

Our Room.

Our little haven.

A large glass sliding door with a rail on the outside and oh what a view greets you. A different one each day. The curtains were sumptuous and kept the light out.

We had two single beds with a bedside table on the outside of each bed. A light above each bed for reading and to turn out at bed time. A huge mirror was above the dressing table which had a chair beneath it. Plenty of drawers and cupboards in the dresser with enough space for all our bits and pieces. On the dresser were plugged in our vox boxes that were supplied by the tour to take with us on excursions so that we could hear our guide clearly. Above the dresser on a shelf was a TV to watch in bed. A lovely pass time but we were so tired that we did not watch it that often. Viewing on the screen was a view of the Rhine and the boat from the outside so you could view what was ahead. Very interesting to watch especially when in bed. It gave you a whole different perspective.

The wardrobe also had loads of storage space with plenty of shelving. We could store our suitcases and backpacks comfortably in them to get them out of our way. There was a safe in the wardrobe for valuables, passport , money and jewellery. The bathroom was opposite the wardrobe and very spacious and well stocked. Fresh towels were available when we wanted. You just had to leave your towels on the floor for them to be replaced. White towelling dressing gowns hung on the back of the door for our use and were lovely and warm. Body and shampoo gel was in a pump in the shower which was very spacious and took up a whole corner of the room. Hand wash at the sink , tissues , loo paper, moisturiser were on offer and replenished when necessary. Back in the room was the controls for the heating . We found the rooms warm and only used it a few times on the trip. All in all a very comfortable stay. Our best in Europe.

The Souvenir Shop.

Every day there was merchandise was on offer at the souvenir shop on board.  For sale were:scarves, t shirts, windcheaters, aprons nail files, maps, dolls, adelweiss scarf ties, cuckoo clock magnets, raincoats and ponchos, umbrellas, postcards, jewellery and bread bags. [the same as served on our table each day. ] There were glass cases with the merchandise displayed and it was also put out on the reception desk.

The Library.

Consisted of a glass enclose book case loaded with books that you could borrow. I finished one of my books on the cruise so left it in the case. There was a good selection of all kinds of books and magazines to read.  Seats were also available  to sit and enjoy them in quiet.

Reception.

Always manned even overnight and available via telephone from the room. The staff were always friendly and willing to help with any queries. They arranged all our off shore passes for excursions and greeted us on return. They also displayed the souvenirs.  They were great and helped me with computer queries.

Computer room.

The computer room held two computers and I never had trouble getting on one to use. They were European of course and sightly different with for example the umlaut to use which I could do with at home.

Gymn

On the lower deck was the gym. I wanted to use it but was not well on the cruise. It had walking machines and weights. Always empty unlike the bar.

Coffee Bars.

Two were available  twenty four hours a day. All kinds of herbal teas, lots of varieties of coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits. It was a place I visited every day.

Medicine Cabinet.

Panadol and sore throat and cold medications available.

Lost and Found Department.

Always somebody left their glasses somewhere.

Laundry Service

Operated twenty four hours a day. The clothes were promptly returned and beautifully laundered. They did say it could take up to twenty four hours to return but in our case it did not. We put them in at night and they were returned at eight the next morning.

The Staff.

These people worked tirelessly for long hours seven days a week. I don't know how they did it.They were always obliging kind and helpful. They could not have been better. Our cruise directer was bright and funny and went above and beyond even getting on his bike and cycling down to the chemist for antibotics when passengers got sick. I thank them all. They made the journey a delight.

The Top Deck.

Climbing the stairs outside takes you up onto the roof deck.

Here the views are magical especially at night in Budapest. Watching the Rhine Gorge go by with its many castles and villages was very special.

The camera got a good work out.Up on deck were plenty of blue deck chairs and directors chairs to sit on and watch the world go by.

You could take a coffee or a glass of wine up and often Gunther would give us a commentary of what we were floating past. Some days it was brisk while others were nice and mild with sunshine. There were sun roofs to sit under if it got too warm. The atmosphere was great and relaxed. Everyone chatted away and moved around as another fantastic sight came into view.  It was fascinating looking at the vineyards, so neat climbing up the slopes of the hillsides to a higher level. You wondered how the grapes were actually harvested at all. Sometimes when we docked it was next to another boat . We would have to go up onto the deck to disembark by climbing over a ramp onto the next boat and down their stairs, into their foyer and out onto dry land. It was fun. The staff on the other boat would joke with us. There was a period of four days when we were unable to go up on deck and it was closed. This was due tot he fact that the river was swollen and it lowered the space under the bridges and of course this was dangerous.

The Captain in the Crows Nest.

Our Captain was Ukranian and only spoke Rusian and German. He did give all the ladies a red rose on the Captains Welcome night at the beginning of the cruise. He managed the vessel from the crows nest that was visible from the top deck. He sailed the ship superbly and we only felt the occasional slight bump as we nudged the side of the loch as we passed through. Thank you and your son who co navigated for a wonderful safe trip.

We travelled with Travel Marvel on the Sapphire and it was a marvelous experience. One that I will never forget. I am so pleased that I experienced the whole adventure. Thank you to all the staff seen and unseen, waiters, cleaners, chefs, cooks, laundry, reception, crew, bar tenders and a special thank you to Gunther our cruise director for all his hard work and dedication. You were all wonderful.

THANK YOU TRAVEL MARVEL.

Dubai and Homeward Bound.

Good five hour flight. It went quickly and we had a transfer car to our hotel. When we got there no room at the inn on arrival at eleven thirty.Had to wait till two o' clock to get into  the penthouse suite . They had no idea we were arriving but we had our itinerary and voucher. This put them in a spin. Finally collapsed into bed at two am in a huge suite with two bathrooms, a lounge, kitchen, and bedroom all on the seventh floor with a view out over Dubai. The suite had two large screen TV's, one in the bedroom and one in the lounge.

Our final day dawned and we set off from the hotel in sweltering forty one degree heat. Definitely not used to this after thirteen degrees in Germany. We crept along the buildings in the shade just making it to the air conditioning in McDonalds. Had a drink and a sit to regain our energy. We pressed onward to the shopping mall which took us longer to get there than anticipated. [ Or was it the heat.] Finally in the cool comfort of the shops we looked around at all the fabulous merchandise. We decided on some lunch first so headed straight to a Thai restaurant where we had pad Thai noodles and sweet and sour chicken. The waiter who came from the Philippines chatted to us while we waited for our meal to arrive. The noodles were delicious but I could not eat them all so he bagged the leftovers for us to take home and added several small sauces of different flavours which was sweet of him. We had them for dinner with some naan bread and dahl that we ordered to our room at the hotel. Most things on the room service menu were unavailable which made us laugh. After lunch  we set off again for more shopping feeling refreshed and rested. Heidi bought a lovely dark blue Chinese embroidered silk backpack and two pair of sunglasses for half price. She also bought me a silver buckle ring for Mother's Day which was the following weekend. Tired we went upstairs to the more exclusive part of the mall and ordered an ice coffee and iced chocolate sitting down to read magazines while we enjoyed our drinks.

Time to return to the hotel to make the most of our suite and TV's. Out in the heat again we headed straight for the supermarket. It was immaculate. I have never in my life seen such a tidy well stocked and organised supermarket. We bought lollies for the plane, some chips to eat in the room and had a good look around at the stock.

We then made a dash for the hotel. On the way some local men tried to sell us a mobile phone in the street !!! When we got back decided to watch some tele but only two channels in English, both with news. Trump !!! We asked reception about movies so they sent a man up !!! He told us that there were none available so Se La Vie. There goes our movie night. Had tea [ our leftovers] and juice that we had picked up at the supermarket, then played in the computer and read. Easy night in. Early night as up at six in the morning to leave for the airport at seven am.

A380 home. Fantastic plane and huge. Plenty of empty seats and the flight crew told us to use them. So we sprawled out over several seats and slept. I was warm and cosy under my Tibetan shawl with my memory foam neck support. Best things I took on the trip. So comforting. It was a great flight. Ate and watched movies in between sleeping. First meal was breakfast - an omelette , then later in the flight when it got dark they brought out pizza and a drink. Third meal teriyaki  chicken- very nice. Arrived in Melbourne at five  thirty in the morning. Caught the six fifteen airport bus to Frankston. Stopped outside the Quest Hotel and we returned home. Fell into bed and slept for hours. Next day got up and at lunch time and went straight to doctors. Put onto antibiotics and steroids as had pneumonia. What a trip!!!

What I loved about Cambodia

I loved almost everything about Cambodia.   THE PEOPLE The friendly smiling faces of the people who were so helpful. They love to talk to ...
