The Art of Living Simply.

We live in complicated times so I find that coming back to basics is a good idea and helps to being happier. What I mean by living simply is this.

Eating. Let us start with what we eat. I am a vegetarian and love the idea of eating only fruit and vegetables. It is so much cheaper and cleaner. Healthier in many ways for both you and the animal. There are plenty of delicious alternatives for vegetarians and is so much easier than it used to be. I actually enjoy the challenge. My daughter and I love noodles and rice so a bowl with these and some vegetables makes us happy and healthier. Tofu is another go to and can be prepared in many ways.

Meditation. This has been so helpful for me over the years. It is calming and reflective. For a short time or longer lengths it helps with every day life. I tend to do it at night in bed as I am not a morning person. Guided meditation is helpful in the beginning to get into the way of doing it. There are plenty on you tube to choose from. Also wonderful to sit outside on a warm day and meditate in the garden. Try it and see.

Recycling. I have always been keen on recycling. From rubbish, paper, compost, clothes, and household items. All my food scraps are composted and every spring end up spread around the garden. Paper and tins get recycled. Glass jars go to the opportunity shop as do my unwanted clothes, shoes and household items. Books go to the book exchange at the local shopping mall. Once a year the council collects any larger items for dumping or resale.

Feeding the birds. This is a favourite occupation of mine. I love my birds in the garden and give them a helping hand. I have several bird baths and water dishes scattered around for them to use and love to watch them take a bath. Wild bird seed goes into several feeders dotted around and apples, bread and food leftovers get thrown on the lawn. We get pigeons, parrots, cockatoos, honey eaters, magpies and crows.

Reading. What a wonderful occupation. So nice to sit outside and enjoy the sun and read. In winter it is lovely to snuggle up between the sheets and loose yourself in a good book.

Walking. Going to the park, the seaside or just walking round the neighbourhood is a fun rewarding way to spend your time. Keeps you healthy too.

Yoga. This is a good way to stretch your body and calm the mind. I suffer from arthritis with pain and stiffness in the joints. Yoga helps warm up the joints and I have felt it is beneficial to help me sleep. It is a great way to exercise. Can be done on a chair and is very enjoyable.

A Pet. All my life I have always had a pet and until recently we had a dog. He died of old age and we have not replaced him. We do however have our ginger cat called Oscar who is a delight and keeps us constantly amused. We take great delight in his antics. I think pets keep you happier and healthier.

Sleeping. Early to bed and a good nights sleep is essential for functioning well. Reading in bed is also one of my favourite pass times. The cat likes to get into bed as well.

Products. Chemical and cruelty free. The use of  vinegar and soda bicarbonate for cleaning is inexpensive and good for the environment. Cruelty free cosmetics without testing on animals are available and can be purchased at health food shops.

Hobbies. Arts and crafts are a fun and relaxing way to spend the evening. I love to scrapbook and this is a fantastic way to display all those photographs that you have. Knitting is another of my favourite pass times and I find it very relaxing. Find something that you like to do and have some fun.

Opportunity Shopping. This is so much fun as you nrver know what you will find. I buy clothes, books, bags, ceramics, nic nacks, scarves and jewellery. It is so exciting when you come across a great find. So inexpensive and always a challenge. Take it up as it is so much fun chasing that bargain.
